Currency metals: Silver, Gold, Platinum
Gold and silver is the foundation of any economy in Roan. Both being extremely valuable metals, they are used for trinkets, jewellery, currency and decoration, and sometimes, for weapons. Platinum is rarer than silver or gold, but less often used thanks to it’s rarety.
Copper
These metals are fairly common and function as you would expect. Copper is rarely used for much more than sometimes tools or trinkets as it is easy to temper and work with. It is also useful for turning into bronze, which is often used for mundane items and weapons alike, making it helpful for entry level adventurers as it is cheap to purchase.
Iron (Common)
Iron is the most common metal used in Roan. It is used for mundane items such as buckles, cups and hinges. But also armor, weapons and strongboxes. Iron is relatively cheap – which is why it is used nearly everywhere and often functions as the basis for alloys.
Bronze (Uncommon)
A more expensive alloy made from copper & tin. Often underestimated due to its association with two softer metals, but as a complete alloy, it makes for useful spark-less tools, and even considerably durable weaponry & equipment when compared to types of weaker iron alloys.
Steel (Uncommon)
Steel however, as it is much stronger and harder to create, is far less cheap. Steel is still largely utilized by noble houses primarily, especially when outfitting troops and providing to upcoming nobles. That said, the highest nobles often use other metals, but steel is frequently utilized by knights and beyond.
Silver (Uncommon)
Silver is not commonly used within weapons, however a silver coating is much more often used. Namely by noble houses, and the rare adventurer, silver is useful for spell swords and mages more than normal warriors, due to the fact that it conducts magic better - allowing for users of the arcane to utilize their mana better.
Fomorite (Uncommon)
Fomorite, also known as Ruinite is a metal found with Fomors. The metal is made out of an unknown alloy and has similar properties as steel and bronze. It is called Ruinite because it is often found in Fomorian ruins and dungeons. The metal is a known magical material, having far better enchanting properties than avarage steel. It has a rust-brown colour.
Malachite (Rare)
Malachite is a volcanic glass like material that is very effective for strong light armors. When used in combination with a steel base it can be crafted into weapons or armor, otherwise the material is used for durable glass items. Armor or weapons made out of malachite is often called glass armor or glass weapons.
Fyrite (Rare)
Fyrite is a glittering red ore which is cool to the touch, even when cast into flames. It is exceptionally resistant to heat, and can only be worked in supernaturally hot fires, making it extremely expensive. Veins of fyrite ore are found near magma. Fyrite is often used for cups or shields and armor.
Ebony (Very Rare)
Raw ebony itself is an extremely hard, durable, black glass-like substance, said to be the crystalized blood of the gods. Ebony itself is thanks to it’s properties, extremely hard to work with, but skilled smiths are able to forge powerful weapons with it. Ebony is often used as an alternative for adamantine, as ebony is slow to chip or dull with extended use. Ebony is less rare than the higher tier of metal, making it often used by high nobles, however it often comes with negative connotations with evil.
Palesilver (Very Rare)
Often referred to as 'Hunter Silver', this metal is only found to naturally form along the West Montebre mountain ranges. Highly sought after by the Order of the Eagle for it's mythical properties; this enchanted metal contains powerful light energies found to be extremely potent not only against werewolves, but vampires and many varieties of the undead. Though Palesilver tokens exist and are a hallmark of senior inquisitors of the Order of the Eagle, it's rarely exchanged as a form of very high value currency in Durtheim.* Palesilver is also historically known to be used to craft sentimental family trinkets and heirlooms in higher class aristocracies.
Mithril (Mythical)
Mithril is a glistening silvery metal, much harder than steel, and weighing only half as much. It is exceptionally rare and expensive, and prized by every race in Roan. It is said to be found only deep underground, but few, not even the dwarves, can find many traces of mithril. Ironically, the few pieces that have been found and forged into equipment have been found deep in dungeons, or in the lairs of dangerous creatures hoarding the metal for themselves.
Adamantine (Mythical)
Adamantine is an extremely hard, black metal. In its finished form, adamantine metal reflects a clear green sheen under candlelight, and purple-white under magical light. Adamantine weighs as much as steel.
Unprocessed adamantine is hard but brittle and unsuitable for use as a weapon. It has a glossy black appearance, and has the unique property that reflections seen in it glow with rainbow edges. But once it has been fashioned and cooled, adamantine cannot be deformed or bent by mundane means. Weapons made from adamantine do not dull or chip with use.
Adamantine is extremely rare, and only found near Wells or other magical sources of power in small quantities.
Meteorite (Mythical)
Meteorite, or meteoric iron is a special type of metal found in meteorites that struck Roan. It is roughly as strong as Adamantine and Mithril, but is far more easy to enchant and is said to replenish mana under starlight. Though there is little spread across Roan, it is still obtainable by those who seek it.
Draconite (Mythical)
Draconite is an incredibly rare metal, which is claimed to be the scales of the most fearsome dragons - the Fire Dragons. This metal is one of the most durable metals in all of Roan, and is believed to have magical properties that augment the wearer.
Fal (Ascended)
Fal - Fal is a silver-white and smooth metal found in the divine world that is warm and heavy to the touch. It is said to glow slightly. The strength of Fal is incomparable to the metals of the normal world, and is impossible to break without some form of divine means. Allegedly, there is an corrupted version, Black Fal, that has been touched by the demonic realm. Both of these are suspected to be mythical metals.
*The exchange rate for Palesilver tokens to silvers is approximately 250 silver for 1 token.
